What is the Vibe Coding Doom Loop?

TL;DR: The doom loop is that brutal phase of an AI build where fixing one bug instantly creates two more. Because the agent doesn't have a concrete spec to follow, every patch it writes is a blind guess that actively contradicts the rest of the codebase.

The Refactor Spiral

It usually kicks off when your AI agent runs into a tricky bug and tries to brute-force a solution. Because there's no underlying architecture document to reference, the agent patches the immediate issue by cannibalizing something else it built earlier. Unfortunately, that patch breaks a different feature. You ask the agent to fix it, and it breaks something else while doing so. Now three things are broken.

You quickly realize you aren't actually building an app anymore. You are playing whack-a-mole in a codebase that no one, human or AI, can reason about. The agent's context window gets flooded with contradictory logic, and every new prompt pulls the app further away from a working state. It’s a refactor spiral with no exit.

Where the wheels fall off

The trap here is that the doom loop sneaks up on you. You usually hit it right at the 80% wall, the exact moment you try to wire up auth, payments, or multi-tenant database rules to a prototype that was never actually architected to handle them.

The agent tries to cram these heavy, structural features into a codebase that it basically hallucinated on the fly. The integration fails, so you prompt it again to fix the error. By this point however, context rot has already set in. The agent can no longer hold the full picture in its memory, so every patch it attempts just compounds the structural damage.

How to break the loop

The only real way out of the doom loop is to never enter it.

If you hand your agent an Architecture Design Document on day one, it doesn't have to invent fixes. When a bug pops up, the AI resolves it by referencing your actual spec instead of making wild guesses based on limited context.

Pairing that spec with a phased implementation plan keeps the rails on. When you build and verify in strict, isolated stages, you lock in a stable foundation before introducing the next layer of complexity. The doom loop starves because the foundation is actually solid.

Zalcro generates the Architecture Design Document and Prompt Pack that give your agent a definitive source of truth, which prevents the doom loop before it starts.
